In late January 2023, Discord users discovered that running the chat service in the background caused the clock speed of NVIDIA graphics cards to drop. Devices from that manufacturer have a dynamic video memory frequency that changes depending on the workload they receive. Users found that running an instant messaging program causes the video card’s memory frequency to drop by almost 200 MHz. At the same time, the problem is observed both during gaming loads and during stress tests.

Already on February 4, 2023, NVIDIA representatives announced in his official Twitter account the good news about the release of an update that solves the problem. The update is downloaded to the user’s computer automatically when logging into the operating system, so users will not have to spend their time in NVIDIA GeForce Experience to download and manipulate drivers.

The most frequent complaints about memory frequency reduction came from owners of GeForce RTX 3060 Ti and RTX 3080. Users suggest that the emergence of the problem caused by the recent update Discord. However, NVIDIA representatives clarified that the error was in the format of the application profile update. Previously, the problem was fixed manually, but the solution scheme was so complicated that it was not recommended for inexperienced users. With the release of the driver update, all manipulations are done automatically, which avoids potential problems.
